From restaurants to roofs; an unexpected journey to business success

at | Category: Uncategorized

Houston roof maintenanceI’ve been in the roofing business so long – it’s our 20th anniversary here at Precision Roof Crafters – that sometimes it’s hard to believe how I found my way into the home services industry in the first place. Because earlier in my life getting people up on the top of homes was about the furthest thing from what I wanted to be doing.

My first real calling professionally was in the restaurant industry, and after years in management of various successful restaurants I decided to partner with a small group and go out on my own to open my own restaurant. Those plans ended, though, when the property caught fire just before our opening. Unfortunately, due to unexpected and costly pre-opening construction delays, we suspended our insurance with the intent of picking it back up after our doors were open. Without insurance, we didn’t have the ability to recover, replace equipment and rebuild. I lost everything. My partners filed for bankruptcy, but I couldn’t. I was always raised that if you owe someone something, as long as you have your health, no matter how long it takes you find a way to pay it back.

“I didn’t grow up saying that I wanted to get into roofing maintenance, and when you get into the business so late in life it’s a bit like sleeping through the first half of the semester in college and then having to learn everything right before the exam.”

That huge setback meant I was scrambling for a way to earn a living, and a friend who had some experience in the roofing business suggested we open our own roofing company. That seemed like an impossible idea to me at first, but once I realized that ultimately a roofing company is a service business, it seemed a lot more doable. I had connections with property managers from my days in the restaurant world. Once they got over the surprise of me going from doing the thing they knew me to be most passionate about, and only thing they’ve ever known me to do, to the roofing business, we were given the opportunity to bid on projects. Our company pretty much took off like a rocket. We were out there selling the jobs and managing the projects, making sure the clients got what they ordered. We began with just three people back then and now we have a team of over 40 people serving our Houston market, with another 40 in our Florida market.

I didn’t grow up saying that I wanted to get into roofing maintenance, and when you get into the business so late in life it’s a bit like sleeping through the first half of the semester in college and then having to learn everything right before the exam. Thankfully we came up with some vendor partners and other people who saw something in us in those early days. They helped us on our journey to become the successful business that we are today. To them and all our awesome clients from over the years, we’ll always be grateful.
