Not all leaf guards are equal, and why finding the right one matters

at | Category: Gutters

gutterWith winter – or what passes for it here in South Texas – headed our way soon it’s a good time of year for home and commercial property owners to think about what they need to do to prepare for the change of seasons from a roofing system perspective. Here at Precision Roof Crafters our Houston Roofing Contractors tell clients that one of the most important things they can do is clear the debris off of their roof and take the appropriate action to keep gutters and downspouts clear.

This is a very important issue for the fall and winter because if we do experience wet weather or snow and then a freeze, all that moisture mixed in with leaves and other debris is going to put a lot of weight and stress on gutters and roof components. The easiest way to stay ahead of a problem like that is to take a blower and blow debris, leaves, pine needles and other foliage off of the roof and out of your gutters.

It’s also a good idea to get up there with some gloves to scoop out anything that doesn’t blow out of the gutters, and then use a hose to get some water flowing as an extra step to clear things out. We advise clients of all properties to think hard about installing a leaf guard system to keep tree debris from accumulating and creating problem areas. An important thing to consider when looking at a leaf guard system is what kind of tree cover and foliage you have around your house. That’s because a typical system from a Home Depot or Lowe’s are made to stop large maple and similar leaves but it’ll take a higher end product to prevent pine needles and other smaller debris from accumulating. And it’s always worth noting that members of our Overhead Care Club maintenance program get a 22-point roof inspection once a year that includes the removal of large debris from the roof, and discounted gutter cleaning.
